But, beyond any explanation, a lot will remain steeped in mystery, still leaving room for discovery, for wonder. Masseto is a very special wine, a wine that goes far beyond excellence. It represents a unique world, a choice that is extremely close to the values embodied by the earth and the work of man. After a very late 2010, the 2011 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry climate leading to an earlier harvest than the norm. A rainy spring was followed by a warmer spring than usual which anticipated the vegetative cycle of the vineyard for a full 10 days. The budding was particularly fast and homogeneous, a condition that was always very favorable for a great vintage, and the growth of the vines was held back by cooler conditions in June and July. The rains arrived at the right moment after flowering and veraison allowed an excellent development of the bunches, perfect conditions for aromatic development, but even more for the accumulation of an exceptional polyphenolic potential. A peak of heat at the end of August has further accelerated the maturation leading to the earliest harvest in the history of Masseto, and bringing to the cellar a perfectly ripe and balanced grape with no trace of excessive maturation.
